Many small businesses and especially small family business are fraught with relational challenges. Conflict grows naturally in a family enterprise. Conflict in enterprising families is systemic, involving many individuals with different interests and values. The underlying issues often strike to the heart of stakeholder identities. Since conflict is between family members, disagreeing and then going separate ways is often not practical or desired. Family stays family, even in conflict.

Family employees can face unique challenges in carving out satisfying and impactful career paths at their family-owned company – and both family and non-family managers may find it difficult on occasion to manage them. At the same time, maintaining an entrepreneurial culture is often difficult when succeeding generations have grown up more affluent than the founders – or when the company is growing and trying to incorporate a higher level of professionalism.

As clinical psychologist and marriage therapist for over 30 years, Dr. Robbins brings a unique blend of relational/emotional and business insight and expertise to the challenges that family owned small businesses face.
